The island of Elba can be reached by boarding a ferry at Piombino Marittima, where three shipping companies (Toremar, Blu Navy and Moby Lines) run comfortable ferries with several crossings a day.
In around an hour's crossing, you'll cover the roughly 10 km separating the island from the mainland, arriving at the ports of Portoferraio (the main one), Cavo or Rio Marina. Alternatively, there's a fast hydrofoil connection, for passengers only, reaching Portoferraio or Cavo in just 35 minutes.
